Benefits of Pregnancy, Labor and Postpartum Massage
There is no population that undergoes greater transformation of the
human body than pregnant
women. Structurally, physiologically, and chemically, a pregnant woman
experiences innumerable changes which place great stress on her body.
As her weight shifts forward due to enlargement of the uterus and
breasts, additional tension is created in the muscles of the shoulder
girdle, lower back, pelvis, abdomen and legs. Stress on the weight
bearing joints, particularly of the low back and hips can generate
substantial discomfort. The circulatory system increases its blood volume
30 to 50% by the third trimester, often resulting in edema (swelling of
the legs and ankles). All other systems also adapt to support the
pregnancy. More
